Preparing for your Spray Tan
1. Exfoliate all over.
Exfoliation helps slough off any dead skin cells on the top layer of your skin, which is important because otherwise they can shed post-tan, which can lead to your faux glow looking patchy and uneven.
2. Don't shave (or wax) the day of your session.
Shaving and waxing should be done (at least) 24 hours prior to your appointment. This allows time for the skin to calm, ensuring a flawless and comfortable spray tan. If you shave or wax too close to your scheduled session, the spray tan may seep into your pores and produce dark dots. It can also irritate your skin, especially if it's sensitive.
3. But do take a shower.
You should always keep your skin sweat-free before a spray tan. The optimal time to tan is right after a shower, as your skin cells are hydrated and will absorb the tan more evenly for a longer lasting color.
4. Avoid using oil and lotion beforehand.
It’s important to keep your skin hydrated, but don’t use oil or lotion on the day of your appointment. It will interfere with the spray tan development.
5. In fact, go totally au naturel.
Along with avoiding oil and lotion, you should remove all makeup, deodorant and perfume with a cleansing wipe just before the spray. Your skin should be free from any products that could interfere with the spray tan.
6. Stop using retinoids and hydroxy acids.
Twenty-four hours before your appointment, cut out the retinoids and hydroxy acids in your skincare regimen. These ingredients increase cell turnover, which will cause your tan to fade more quickly.
7. Wear dark, loose clothes.
After getting a spray tan, some of the color may rub off onto your clothes. To avoid that issue, wear dark, loose clothes to your appointment. If you feel comfortable, skip your bra and go commando. The looser, the better.
About Airbrush Tanning
An airbrush tan, like any self-tanning product, will not protect your skin from burning in the natural sun or in a UV tanning bed.
Your tan should last you approximately 7-10 days. Avoiding things like long hot showers, chlorine, salt water, and shaving will keep skin hydrated and will hold results longer.
Do not apply deodorant, perfumes, lotions, makeup or oils to the skin prior to tanning.
For best results, wait 8 hours after being airbrushed before showering, exercising and excessive perspiration, or having any contact with water. This will allow your airbrush tan to fully develop and will ensure the optimal results.
The airbrush technician is trained to provide a smooth even tan. However, due to normal skin variations and session variables, it is possible you may occasionally find some areas of your tan slightly lighter or darker than others. In most cases these differences are minor and disappear after your first shower.
All the components of the airbrush tanning solution have been FDA approved and safely used in cosmetics and nutritional products for decades and proven to be safe for the skin. If you have had adverse effects utilizing self-tanning products or moisturizers in the past, you may experience similar effects with our airbrush solution. Less than 1% can have an allergic reaction to the solution. Please discuss this with your technician before your tan.
If you have any history of asthma or other respiratory or medical conditions that could be aggravated by the use of the airbrush solution, please consult a physician before proceeding.
Please tell your tanning technician of any past allergic reactions to DHA products or other medical concerns.
